Program Note
My first composition for piano and the earliest piece on my active works list, Initiation begins to examine terrain that remains fertile in my later works for the instrument: contrasting textures, from chordal to figurative to contrapuntal; and pedaling effects focused on sustained sonorities. These coloristic forays become increasingly important over the course of the work’s 3 movements, and are mapped to harmonic language that becomes progressively more austere.
