Program Notes
Jabberwocky was composed in 1994. Its approach is an embrace of the hyper-dramatic, the mythic, the mysterious, alien, and comic aspects of the Carroll’s nonsense poem from Through the Looking Glass. Comprising a palette of rapidly changing textures to match the shifting narrative, the piece is, for me, uncharacteristically eclectic, featuring a Queen Mab scherzo for oboe and bass eventually leading to an antic waltz.
