Epitaph (2019)

for flute and piano
duration: 11’
SMMP No. 126

Program Note (Spanish Translation)

In February 2017 the US Government instituted a zero tolerance policy for undocumented border crossings that gave it extraordinary new powers to split up migrant families into separate detention facilities. This program was announced publicly in May 2018 by then Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who made his statement while standing near the security fence between San Diego and Tijuana. Soon, national reporting revealed that children were being taken from their parents or accompanying guardians in large numbers with no plan for reunification. Indeed, many of these children were sent to foster homes, and some were eventually placed for adoption. In June 2018 a new term entered the lexicon, ‘tender age’ shelters, designated for children under 12 years of age, though it was later discovered that the youngest child taken into US Custody was only four months old. After a public outcry an executive order halting separations was signed on June 20, 2018, but this did little to reduce the terror inflicted upon people who were coming to this country with the hope of finding peace and opportunity for their families. In December 2018, two young children from Guatemala, Jakelin Caal Maquin (age 7), and Felipe Gómez Alonzo (age 8), died while in US custody. Their deaths were the result of malice, not just neglect – the culminating stage of performative cruelty that defines the administration of immigration policy in the United States in this era.

In composing Epitaph, my intent was to produce a theatrical reflection focusing on displacement, isolation, and loss. The score uses brief text fragments drawn from Agamemnon and Hecuba, by Aeschylus, and The Trojan Women, by Euripedes, reaching back to antiquity to find a common thread of suffering. I am, as ever, obsessed with historical echoes. In Epitaph the pianist and flute player are separated in the performance space, and each plays material that tends to become cyclical, as if mired in a recursive trope through circular thoughts of despair. Although the boundaries imposed on these materials inhibit their ability to develop into fluid, discursive behavior, there is an increasingly searing sense of intensity and depth of focus as the piece unfolds. The two players, having been occupied with distinct (though occasionally overlapping) textual cues, eventually engage in a simultaneous response to the same texts. Still isolated, their shared plight indicates they are not alone.

Epitaph emerged after a period of creative paralysis. I am deeply grateful to my dear friends Elizabeth McNutt and Shannon Wettstein Sadler (aka Calliope Duo) for the opportunity to express these thoughts. Through our work together, we endeavor to respond to the monstrous, the cruel, and the obscene with humanity, compassion, and thoughtfulness.
